All Seniors planning on going to college in the fall should submit your FAFSA as soon as possible.  Complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov
 
FAFSA Worksheets are available in the counseling office for those who would like to use a paper copy before submitting online.  You can also access the Worksheet online.

The FINAL application deadline at many colleges are quickly approaching.  If you are still planning on applying to other schools make sure you get your application completed ASAP! 
 
Once the final application deadline has passed most colleges only accept students based on space availability.  If the deadline has passed and you still want to apply you should contact the admissions office at that College/University.

LaKeshia Stroud, a Highland graduate, is recruiting volunteers to help at the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store at 1840 E. Franklin St. in Gastonia. Typical volunteer hours are on Saturdays from 9am-5pm. If you are interested, call LaKeshia at 980 989 3068. Tell her that you are a Highland student.

The Carolina Association of Black Journalists (CABJ) and the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will host a one-day event for minority high school students interested in journalism. Talented juniors and seniors involved with school publications or other media are encouraged to apply.

 

The only cost to the student will be a $25 registration fee (refundable if the applicant is not accepted). The day’s activities include training on use of multimedia equipment, background on the journalism industry, and the opportunity to work one-on-one with student journalists and local professionals.

 

The seminar will take place Saturday February 25, 2012, at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication on the UNC-CH campus. The postmark deadline for applications is February 10, 2012.

 

A summary of the criteria for selection:

Junior or senior in 2011-12 school year

Involved with school publication or media, although consideration also will be given to students who are interested in journalism as a career

One writing sample

 

UNC faculty and area professionals will discuss careers in journalism, writing and producing skills, and more. The students will be able to build relationships and meet prospective mentors in the journalism industry.

Meals—breakfast, lunch and dinner—will be provided. Workshops will be in UNC-CH’s nationally ranked School of Journalism and Mass Communication in Carroll Hall.

The first annual VISINE® STUDENTS WITH VISION™ Scholarship Program

is offering one-time $5,000 scholarships to students who have demonstrated a clear vision or goal for their future. High school seniors and current college students with a minimum GPA of 2.8 may submit an online application beginning February 15, 2012. The deadline to apply is April 16, 2012.

VISINE® STUDENTS WITH VISION™ Scholarship Program recipients are selected based on academic achievement, school and community involvement, financial need and demonstrated vision or goal.

AG Myers Scholarship applications are available in the counseling office or online at http://www.gaston.k12.nc.us/parents/Pages/Scholarships.aspx . Applications are due to Dr. Parker by Feb. 24. A completed application includes the application form (with signatures), a personal statement, a signed financial statement from parent, two recommendations and a transcript. Awards are based on purpose in life, financial need, character, qualities of leadership, extracurricular participation, and scholastic achievement.

Martha Guy Summer Institute for Future Business Leaders at Appalachian State University is a program for current juniors interested in business as a college major. Dates are July 8-28 application available at www.marthaguy.appstate.edu

Cost is estimated at $2750 and includes travel to Washington DC and New York City. Scholarships are available. Deadline for application is March 1

LENS @ Wake Forest is a three-week summer program that equips current 10th and 11th high school students with an academic foundation necessary to become global citizens.  The academic theme for 2012 is Confronting the Challenges of Global Sustainability.  Wake Forest University professors and experts will engage students in the biological, ecological, political, economic, social, and legal aspects of sustainability. The Experiential Classroom will offer participants hands-on opportunities to explore scientific concepts underlying current issues of sustainability.  Living Labs will allow participants to explore local businesses and industries incorporating principles of sustainability.  Small Group sessions will facilitate a platform for participants to put their knowledge into action through real-world community action plans.  In addition to the interactive learning, LENS offers a variety of fun activities to introduce you to the social life of college.

Applications accepted March 1 and then on a rolling basis after that.

The ACT College Admissions Assessment will be given free of charge to all North Carolina 11th graders on March 6, 2012; the makeup date is March 20, 2012. After the 2011–12 pilot year, the ACT will become part of North Carolina’s school accountability program in 2012–13.

Students who have taken either the SAT or the ACT prior to January 1, 2012, and have scores that meet the college readiness benchmark standards, do not have to participate in the statewide ACT administration. However, it is the students’ responsibility to notify the school that they do not wish to participate in the ACT.  For more details click on "ACT" in the title on the left to view an attachment. 

We recommend that all Juniors regardless of a prior test take the ACT on March 6th.
